Assignment #3: iPads in the News

For this week's assignment, we would like you to search the web to find a relevant news article or blog entry on iPads in Education.  When you find something that would be beneficial to others participating in this pilot, add a comment on this post.  Please put the name of the article, the source of the article (or the blog name), and what you learned.  If you want to include a link, please see the directions under the "Apps, Apps, Everywhere" post).

  1. I dont know if im early on this one, but this site
    "ipadschools wiki"
has a great deal of info on the practical application of the ipad, as well as management ideas that we may be able to use/tweek. I would love to use some of the ideas that they have on here if I get my class set. It is also another great resource for content and ideas.

  2. ShowMe is an extension of what I do with my whiteboard. It comes with its own hosting options, and as far as I can tell wont allow you to record other applications in action, but it is a decent whiteboard. Basically you can record a mini-lesson and host it on a personal page on their site. I got the link from Apps in Education which has many options for iPad educational apps and tips.

  3. I found a website from the UK. It basically has a rationale for how the ipad fits into classroom. It refers to "agile" space, meaning something that isn't a laptop or a desktop (but isn't just a handheld). The site has ideas for how to use it in the classroom and lots of apps. Ian Wilson, an Apple Distinguished Educator runs the website. http://ipadineducation.co.uk/iPad_in_Education/iPads_in_Schools.html

  5. There was an article in Frobes, by Elizabeth Woyke, which talks about a study done at the University of Notre Dame on the pros and cons of the ipad in the classroom. http://blogs.forbes.com/elizabethwoyke/2011/01/21/pros-and-cons-of-ipads-in-the-classroom/
It was interesting that there were several positive "side effects" that were noted. One example of this was that the ipad encouraged time management. I would like to know how the second part of this study is going.

  6. I read lots of articles for this assignment, trying to find something new. However, most of them seem to be a list of schools that are starting ipad pilot programs. All agree that there is no research yet on how ipad use effects learning. Special Education classes show the most obvious positive outcomes, according to one author. This site has several links that are interesting: http://www.ipadinschools.com/

  7. I checked many articles and they seem to mostly just state that the technology was being introduced. I later found www.thenerdyteacher.com This is an interesting blog about Nick Provanzano, a High School English teacher in the Detroit metro area. He started documenting last year and he blogs about his experiences introducing and using the Ipad in his classroom and at home. Most of us could probably relate to a lot of his experiences.

  8. I found several sites with teacher-tested app recommendations. I especially liked http://ipadeducators.ning.com/forum/topics/what-are-your-essential?xg_source=activity

    "displayed text"

I'm still looking eagerly for good classroom apps!

  9. I also liked the entire ipadeducators.ning.com site.

The ning site is a community forum to support educators using ipads in schools. It has a variety of forum threads and blog entries that I thought would be useful as well as some tips and tricks for using the ipad. The site has over 1,800 members, but it seems like most of the entries are by the developer of the site.

  10. Here is a great video to watch:
    http://youtu.be/oYLirypK_Yo
    "One Transformed Classroom"

It is a video of an Alaskan classroom (5th grade), 15 iPads for 29 students. Note all the cool activities the teacher has them involved in using the computers. Several gave me ideas, although having just the one certainly limits the potential for next year. The math part was fantastic.

Watch the video just to get some ideas for your level.

  11. This article is about Twitter...and indirectly about IPads. This is a very interesting article on tools to use for IPads...Social Media in the classrooms. As much as I love books and the printed word - it seems we are all going this way...more to come! I have other articles I want to post.

  12. While I am trying to see how the IPad can be used by Administrators, it has been challenging finding resources online that target this - I have signed up for all 4 Apple Summer Semester series lectures and will report on those after I attend them.

I am still looking and will continue to post items related and unrelated to Admins in schools.

  13. http://ipadinsight.com/ipad-in-education-2/ipad-in-education-art-authority-for-ipad-chosen-for-universitys-art-history-classes

This blog discusses the use of the app. "Art Authority" in a ipad pilot program Seton Hall for the art history dept. I bought the app and see how it can revolutionize the teaching of art history and art appreciation in education. One of the things I like about the app,, aside form having all sorts of artwork in one place, at my fingertips, is the fact that I can look at any particular work on the app. very close up.

  14. Several school districts in the Scranton area began using iPads for special needs students. I found it important because the students I teach often need special support. The class I have next year will need some new ways to engage with the material. I am hopeful that I can have them use the ipads and I can get instant feedback on how they are progressing. I also think it that I will be able to use the articles I have linked in my Freedom Fighters class to use during class time. It is an exciting prospect.

  15. Though this article applies to business conferences, the use in classroom teaching is very similar. What struck me was how to make displays that can be accessed on the ipads/tablets, and also the way that froms can be completed on the pads an sent. This could be useful for classroom activities like quizzes, charts, study guides, as well as grids that can be constructed to help students absorb materials.

I am going to work on some over the summer for my fall class.

  16. I was taking to a friend of mine, and she is friends with the head of St. Andrews School in Savannah. It is a Pre-K through 12 school with about 500 kids. Last year, they went from fairly archaic technology to doing this huge technology transformation, part of which included getting I-pads for all of their students, one-to-one, at least starting with the third grade. They got 480 I-pads. My friend is trying to contact the head to see how it has all gone. In the meantime, I have looked them up on the net, and there have been a few articles, though brief, about their "Discovery Initiative.". There is also a thirty minute interview with the head of the middle school in which he shares how things were going as of January. I will send that link in my next post when I figure out how to do that without losing what I have just written!

I also read several debates about the pros and cons of using I-pads, especially with younger kids. There was a lot of debate about the importance of kinesthetics in memory for letters -- such as when kids are learning to write.

I will get that link as well...I am going to send this now, though, so I don't lose my thoughts...

  17. I just watched the "One Transformed Classroom" video that Brian found. It is inspiring. I wish my kids could play Words with Friends with several opponents. I like the math box use on ipad. I was nervous watching the kids eating ice cream over their ipads. They seemed to take care of the ipads without much extra attention or teacher time.

  18. Like Martin, I found lots of articles on different pilot programs in schools. I also found several websites, supported by apple, explaining how to use iPads in the classroom. I think the most interesting things that I have read have been on my Ap bio list serve. According to AP teachers around the country, the jury is still out as to the usefulness of this technology.

  19. Have you heard of PREZI??

    http://news.cnet.com/8301-13641_3-10315737-44.html

This article is an introduction to PREZI. I'm doing more investigation on this presentation tool but the short of it is PREZI is a visually interactive alternative to PowerPoint and Keynote.

    Here's how it works:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxhqD0hNx4Q&feature=youtube_gdata_player

I'm pretty excited about this because it can possibly spice up class lectures. The format shows the "big picture" then provides a visual trail to those pesky, yet important, details that our students may forget. There's an app that allows you to access your PREZIs on your iPad (Prezi Viewer) for in class use.  I'm hoping this app will help students visually connect the dots of complex concepts, which is sometimes difficult to do with outlines, slides, and class notes.

Here is a link to how PREZI can be used in the classroom:

  20. Re: my earlier post. The article reports findings of a survey conducted in the Littleton CO public schools in 2009-2010 on the efficacy of net books in the classroom. Student responses were positive. Significantly, the Littleton writing program included student blogging and peer reaction, so students were more on their A game. They also believed their writing improved through the use of easily accessible tools on the net books. These are rather obvious benefits of a personal computer of any kind, but the study provides data beyond anecdote. I've not been a fan of student blogging but will reconsider it as a teaching tool in light of this article.

I thought we were frontrunners! According to this article, we've only jumped on the bandwagon. This article discusses the interactive opportunities that iPad text books provide and how this kind of learning is more effective. I'm really excited to check out ibook author, which allows teachers (or students) to create their own textbooks. Because many of us create a unique curriculum, I feel that this program will be a huge asset to Paideia.
