Ebooks...What's your opinion?

We would like your feedback on using ebooks at school.  If you or your students have used any ebooks for your class, please comment below and let us know what  your experience has been.  We would like to know which ebooks you have tried, what app you are using to access the books, the pros and cons of ebooks, and anything else you think we should know about your experience with ebooks.

  1. I'm currently using two ebooks: Kick Me and Unwind. both are Reading Bowl book for Jr. High. So far so good. A nice feature is that kids can highlight and take notes right on the text. Next I'll experiment with sharing responses among the group.

After this, I plan on starting a novel in class with the 7th graders. The e-version will ensure that kids have their work with them, as they are almost never without their ipads.

  2. Many of my Chemistry students are using the iBook version of the textbook. So far it seems to be working well. There have been just a few minor glitches; a couple of the problems in the iBook are slightly different from the physical book, and it doesn't have some of the practice problems. But the iBook also has some interactive features that the physical book obviously doesn't have.

I don't require my students to bring their textbook every day because we rarely use it during class and it seems silly for them to lug it to and from school every day. But sometimes we need to look something up, so it's convenient that some of my students have it on their iPads.

  3. I am new to using the kindle app, and I have to say (I was sure I would HATE reading on the ipad) that I really like reading on the ipad. It does not seem to tire my eyes as much as I thought it would.

In terms of students reading handouts on the ipad or potentially reading their assigned books, the notetaking and highlighting features on pdf annotate or notability are fantastic! These tools can help students organize their ideas for writing assignments.
