Summer Assignment #3: Planning ahead

For this assignment, we would like you to plan a project for the upcoming school year that incorporates iPads.  Assume that you would be using the seven checkout iPads during this project.  Describe the activities you would do during this project.  Don't forget to include any app names.

I am planning to use the iPads to support learning in a conversation class with students whose writing skills are challenged but who love communicating in Spanish. First they will use an app called:'hola' and choose some conversational phrases to create a dialogue. Then they will use a note taking app (not decided which one yet) to write out their dialogue. After practicing they will video eachother in the interview and then create a short film using imovie! this may take two lessons but the idea is to keep it snappy and productive.

  2. I am planning to use the ipad for the final exam review project. I will be assigning students to groups. Each group will be responsible for creating a tutorial that will review a particular section. At a minimum, the tutoring must include video solutions to selected problems. I plan to encourage students to use the educreations app to create the video solutions.

  3. I would like to use the iPads right off the bat, starting the first or second day of school. Typically we have kids interview each other and present the person they interviewed to the rest of the class. It's a good way for kids to get to know each other and to practice being up in front of the group. It can get a bit tedious, though, having each pair of kids present in front of the others. So instead, what I would like to do is have the kids pair up with our seven iPads plus seven checked out ones and have them piece together a three minute video on the person they are interviewing. That way they would get their first exposure with iMovie, a software we'll use extensively this year. We'll get a sense of who is already adept with it, and who is going to need more thorough training. In this way we'll get the intro piece done while also familiarizing our kids with the iPads, procedures, etc.

  4. I'd like to have my students make their own lessons using Educreations or Showme. This could be a good review assignment, either for an individual test or the final exam. I'll assign each pair of students a topic. I'll ask them to plan out what they want to say and prepare any diagrams they need, and get that approved by me. Then I'll give them an iPad (or they can use their own if they have it) to actually record it. I think the kids would enjoy this project and get some good review out of it. It would also give us some videos for next year's students to use.

  5. I plan to expand on my ideas of introducing students to mature artists working on the iPad. That part is not so easy, but I have found two, David Hockney using Brushes and Jorge Colombo using Brushes and Brushes Viewer (on the computer). Then in a collaborative activity, students will add to each other’s drawings in the same app used by the established artists. As the drawing is evolving, each student will record on paper the changes taking place on the big screen. This back and forth between the iPad and traditional art materials should expand their ideas of what drawing is. This concept can be used with either my elementary or my HS students. With 7 or 8 iPads, students can pair to collaborate on drawings.

  6. I am going to try and use the Ipad on the second day by having everyone get socrative and then complete a couple of "what do you know" quizzes. I always start the year by asking the students what they know about econ and use some simple quizzes that become the basis of the intro to the course. I am excited about the possibility of them logging in and me being able to see where the entire class stands on each question. I can reference their answers a lot.

  7. The Bacterial ID Lab will be perfect for introducing AP students to using DNA sequencing to identify genes and organisms, and also allows them to find their way around the NCBI (National Center for Biotechnology Information)BLAST services.

  8. One way we will frequently use the iPads is in researching and note taking for our Book of Wonder questions. Here the kids each ask a why or how question on a subject of personal interest and then take notes as they research an initial answer. Results are shared with the class and often elicit peer response or discussion. Periodically, students will be asked to choose one question for deeper investigation and clarification. This activity will allow us to incorporate Natalie’s research suggestions of using the “curious,” “wonder,” and “surprised” words as well as her “plan, do, and review” procedure. Subject matter is massive, so any variety of aps might apply, but certainly typing and note taking aps (as in Notability???) will be used.

  9. One app that I will be using this year is named Tools For Students. Students will have to be working on the book "Wonder" in Junior High as it's a community book read for our entire JH and they were given an assignment to complete. Using the "Sequence Events 2" or "Main Idea/Detail" portions, they can break the assignment down into manageable chunks, practice note taking and complete their assignments

  10. Members of the bird club will use the Sibley lite bird i.d. app. as a reference and then photograph and record bird songs during scheduled field trips. We will then use the information collected by students to better understand bird behavior and aid in identification
